Every (well, most) morning, around 7/7.30 you can find me in the corner chair in our local starbucks, writing my blog. I meet some friends here, have done for years.
Today there are 3 of us so far - and there is silence, I'm writing and the two guys are reading. There were hugs and handshakes when they arrived and some quick banter and very quickly everyone sat down and are now in their own little worlds.
Compare this to Friday, when there were about 20 people here and we got asked to keep the noise down so they could here the customers at the drive through window. Some days even two or three of us have long, deep conversations, other mornings, we are shallow and funny. You never quite know, and I love that.
To have a group of friends that you can sit in silence with is pure delight, it feels like home. It could all change with the next person who walks through the door and that would be great too. I am very lucky to have this little morning ritual to start my day, even though today we haven't yet said 50 words to each other, its a comfort level that many strive to find. They have no idea I'm writing about this, or them, one or the other will eventually check my blog and will laugh, and at some point I will be teased for doing this. It's like family.
We have, some mornings, argued over who would win in a fight between broccoli and carrots, where the web is going (through 2.0 and now towards 3.0), we have discussed religion, politics, music, sarcasm, we have set each other up, made each other mad (very occassionally) and shared successes and problems (frequently). Today we are sitting in silence and it's easy, comfortable. As a communication coach, I appreciate all types of communication and we are saying just as much to each other as if we were deep in conversation.
Within 30 mins or an hour (depending on the day) we will all be gone, but I know I will be slightly better, for having started my day this way. When you live in a diffirent country you appreciate every little thing that feels like home, and this feels that way.
If you are ever in Lafayette, La and feel like a morning coffee please message me and I'll tell you where to come.
(comments from one of the guys)
I was corrected on my grammer, spelling.. and asked to correct the phrase "Some days even two or three of us have long, deep conversations, other mornings, we are shallow and funny." to "other mornings, we are shallow and we are ALWAYS funny" He didn't say anything good, but he smiled (yes I noticed) so I could tell through the silence that he got it too.
