Count your blessings..

Well the storm has mainly past and we got off very lightly thanks to it's lack of organization - see that could be a good thing. 

We just drove around the city - had to go and check on some businesses for a friend and it's more or less the same story everywhere. Tree limbs down, lots of branches everywhere, a few signs, we saw one building with damage but mainly the place is just messy - like a hurricane just came through. 

Houma and Morgan City got hit pretty hard, they took the brunt of this and I'm sure in the coming hours and days we will hear stories that will touch all of us.

Tonight, wherever you are just look around at what you have, not what you don't have and count those blessings.

The storm has officially been downgraded according to some sources.. and that's a good thing - now if someone could tell the storm. 

We just heard trees crashing down from next door, looks like it's just limbs though, We lost electricity but like the internet, within a few minutes it was back.. that's just confusing. But I'm not asking any questions. 

I just called my Mum to reassure here.. when I told her there was a curfew in effect from 8pm tonight (because you can't see downed trees and power lines at night) she replied.. "Oh dear, so what are you planning to do tonight" - she really is a highly intelligent wonderful woman (i'm just portraying her as a sweet old dear)

We're back !

Don't quite understand how but we now have TV and internet again.. strange. Must have just been a blip. 

This sums it up. Our TV.

We still have power though. Hundreds of thousands don't. Would have my fingers crossed but I can't type that way.

Update

We have now lost Internet so I'm posting from my iPhone -we have video but can't get it online at the moment. Winds are very powerful but we are completely safe. I'm off to put the kettle on.

now this is a storm...

We are now beginning to see the real effects of Hurricane Gustav, winds are now 70+ mph and gusting. At this speed the wind sounds like a truck coming down the road and sometimes emits a spooky humming noise, beautiful but scary. 

Lots of branches down from the tree, some other limbs hanging - we are just hoping nothing comes through the roof. 

As the storm moves over us, we will move from being on it's best side to being on the dreaded east side that will bring more water, and stronger winds. The good thing is that it's moving faster than predicted and so it won't have a chance to dump as much water as it would if it was slower. 

This is a really bad picture of me outside, it's very wet and very gusty. We still have electricity and internet which is amazing. So far people are staying hunkered down and communicating via text message and on facebook. Everyone is fine.

update

We are getting quite a bit of wind and some squally rain at the moment....Here are pictures of the 75ft oak tree in our front yard (garden) at the moment.. I'll try and take pics later.. we are expecting it to get worse, but not as bad as they feared. Winds probably about 30/35 miles an hour.. but we are expecting them to maybe hit 80 -100 miles an hour.

We still have electricity, internet, coffee and our sarcastic sense of humor. We are watching the local TV and getting consistent updates and information.
